USA Day 62 - Yosemite (part 2)

Total States Visited: 47
Where Are We Sleeping Tonight: Anchor Inn, Morro Bay, California

After one of the best nights camping we have had in a long time, we headed back into Yosemite National Park. After seeing all the rocky formations yesterday, today we decided to take a walk through the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. The highlight was most probably seeing "Grizzly Giant" - one of the largest Sequoias in the world.

Walking back to the carpark,we decided to take a route that no one else was taking. It was sign posted at the beginning of the trail but we very quickly found ourselves walking through forest on a sandy trail (previously it had been a boardwalk) and I was worried that we were going to get into trouble for walking somewhere we weren't supposed to. That said, we saw some wonderful formations in the hills that we would have otherwise missed.

We made our way to the Ansel Adams Gallery that is located in the park. Any true photographer knows his work and to visit one of the places that inspired him and to see his work in person is amazing - ranging from $8,000 to $50,000, I doubt we will ever own an original Ansel Adams image.

“I hope that my work will encourage self expression in others and stimulate the search for beauty and creative excitement in the great world around us.” — Ansel Adams

Continuing on through the park, it was time to see the famous El Capitan. I always knew that it was a sheer rock face but seeing it in person I couldn't help but look at it in awe. Perhaps "because it is there" is not sufficient reason for climbing a mountain...

After driving on a road through a very VERY narrow rock formation (I thought we were going to lose our side mirrors), we left Yosemite and continued on our way. After grabbing some lunch at Carl's Jr in Oakhurst, we continued on to Fresno. We had original planned on staying here but after hearing that Fresno is considered the Crystal Meth capital of America, we filled up the gas tank and kept on going. We did however see a roadside stall selling fresh local honey where the owners had dressed their child up in a bee costume...

Arriving in Morro Bay, after checking into our hotel, we explored the south pier. With a plethora of seafood restaurants, we had difficulty picking the best one to try for dinner. Our issue was that we have travelled half way around the world and tasted so many local dishes, why would we chose a restaurant here that served Western Australian Lobster?! We ended up choosing the Harbour Hut and the food was wonderful. We started with a dozen oysters and then had a couple of wonderful seafood dishes. The prices were a little on the expensive side but we had a lovely corner window table with a wonderful view of the bay. It is almost a little sad to think that we only have a couple more days in America before we return to our normal lives.
