USA Day 50 - Crystal Lake

Total States Visited: 38
Where Are We Sleeping Tonight: Madison KOA, De Forest, Wisconsin

As a huge fan of the Friday the 13th films, we had to pay a visit to Crystal Lake, the place where Jason Voorhees became a crazed mass murderer. The actual lake in Crystal Lake looks exactly the sam as the one featured in the films, all the way down to the life guards not paying attention! In the carpark we even spotted a police car - I wonder if they are on the lookout for a guy wearing a hockey mask...

Continuing north, we arrived in Milwaukee, home of Happy Days. The main reason for us visiting here was the architectural triumph that is the Milwaukee Art Museum. The graceful Quadracci Pavilion is a sculptural, postmodern addition designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. With it's Dalek like corridors, and with windows reminiscent of those in Ten Forward, this building cries out to be photographed - even the undercover carpark was photogenic!

With our cameras full of etherial images, it was time to head west towards Iowa. As the sun continued to get lower in the sky, we decided to stop in the town of Madison for dinner. We had been saying for ages that we had to try the food at Hooters and the one in East Madison made us wish we had try them sooner. The food was amazing - especially the all you can eat chicken wings $10.99! All of the staff were amazed that we had come all the way from Australia, including our waitress. She was telling us how she hopes to visit Australia one day, but that her dream is to travel to Tanzania and help children who were born with a cleft palate...

Arriving in Deforest at the KOA, we couldn't help but notice that it is adjacent to a Burger King that has a giant cow out the front! Apparently her name is Sissy, but we couldn't understand why the sign said to try their chicken...
