USA Day 40 - Yale University

Total States Visited: 28
Where Are We Sleeping Tonight: Mystic, Stonington, Connecticut

We left the hotel relatively early as we had a little bit of driving to do, once we got our car back. Riding the subway out to JFK International Airport, we were all starting to miss New York City... even Teddy!

After the rip off that is the Airtrain, I was delighted to pick up the car from the long term parking, which was a lot cheaper than I had been expecting. Relieved that the car hadn't been broken in to or stolen, we headed out on our way to the Brooklyn Bridge. We drove around and around and around but there is a serious shortage of parking - sadly we had to leave without getting any opportunity to see the bridge. Brooklyn needs to seriously reassess itself, especially with a catch phrase like "believe the hype" but we did at least get one final look back at NYC, even if it was behind a huge cemetery...

Heading out through the Bronx, we crossed over into Connecticut on our way to New Haven, home of Yale University. The campus was a weird mix of old buildings that I was expecting, but also of additions from the 1970s that just look dated and out of place. The best part of our "walk through the campus and hope we don't get into trouble" tour was that we found the fallout shelter - I bet that's not on the official tour!

After driving through the wonderful countryside of Connecticut, we arrived in Mystic - what is with the peak hour traffic congestion? It isn't a very big town but it took forever to drive through it. We did however get to see the famous Mystic Pizza, inspiration for the Julia Roberts film of the same name. As we had plenty of time on our side, we had to stop in for dinner. It was very busy so the wait was longer than I would have preferred (especially as we were rather hungry) but the wait was definitely worth it.
