Where Are We Sleeping Tonight: Super 8, Wilmington, North Carolina
First thing this morning, we headed into the centre of Savannah and tried to find somewhere to park the car so we could walk around the city. After lots of bays being marked for church use only, we eventually found somewhere, literally after driving around the block 3 times! And they say parking in Perth is bad! Out of the car, we started roaming the streets.
Walking down Bull Street, we were amazed at the wonderful architecture that seemed to cry Savannah to us. There were several places up for sale - I wonder how much places go for here... Continuing past an unfortunately closed antique shop, we arrived at Forsyth Park. There were children playing in the park (along with squirrels chasing each other), people relaxing with a good book on the benches, and a superb fountain - it was a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere.
After an uneventful drive, which included a forgettable lunch at Huddle House in Hardeeville, we arrived at our next port of call, Charleston, where we visited the Fort Sumter National Monument, best known as the site upon which the shots initiating the American Civil War were fired. The Visitor Education Center's museum here even has the remains of the original flag that flew here on that day, 150 years ago!
Continuing north, are next stop was the vacation sea-side town of Myrtle Beach. After seeing huge mini-golf courses like I have never seen before (like Mount Atlanticus and Cancun Lagoon), we saw a sign that simply stated "Gay Dolphin: $5 for 4 hours"... with all sorts of ideas running through our heads about what the 4 hours with a gay dolphin was about, we drove around to find out that the sign was talking about a parking area... ahhh... what that kind of makes sense... except for the gay dolphin reference... So anyway, after we parked at the "gay dolphin" parking area, we went for a walk along the main street, where we saw every sort of touristy shop you could imagine - there was even a store that specialised in ladies handbags and various weapons, from hand guns to riffles to swords - just what every lady needs! As we headed down towards the beach, we saw the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove... now I get the carpark... except now I want to know why they called the shop "Gay Dolphin"... The store was on three levels and they had just about everything you could think of, from Star Wars collectables to dolphins (obviously).
After a relaxing stroll along the beach, we headed back to the main street, looking for somewhere to have dinner. We picked the Beach House Bar & Grill and I am glad that we did! The seafood platter was fantastic and the atmosphere made us feel like we were on a tropical beach - Clare even got to enjoy a cocktail or two :)
Once more on the road, we headed towards the randomly picked town of Wilmington in North Carolina. As the sun set, we saw a pawn shop that we just had to turn back to get a photo of...
