Where Are We Sleeping Tonight: Paramount Hotel, New York City, New York
Waking this morning with a sour taste in our mouths, we had to check out of our room and put our bags into storage. The four elevators in the hotel were in high demand, especially as two of the elevators were out of order, and they just hold 4 people (with bags). By the time they got to our level, they were already full - this hotel sucks! We had batter be able to check back in at 3pm or I will explode!
Venturing out into 'the city that never sleeps', we started our day with bagels for breakfast. Selecting from a huge range of cream cheese, I picked bacon and cheddar, while Clare had salmon. Apart from excessive amounts of cream cheese, they were great!. With our bellies full, we jumped on the subway and went uptown to Columbus Circle where we got to visit FAO Schwartz, home of the giant piano!
After visiting the best toy store ever, we crossed the road and walked through Central Park - it looks just like it does in the movies! Walking through the park, we stumbled across the Tin Pan Blues Band - they were great! We had to buy their CDs - 2 for $20 - bargain!
Continuing through the park, we saw the famous Bethesda Fountain, Belvedere Castle, a very friend squirrel who wasn't camera shy, and of course the zoo where they had statues of kangaroos playing music instruments. Just like they do back home on the farm...
Exiting the park, we found ourselves right outside the Natural History Museum, covered in scaffolding - must everything we visit on this holiday be under repair?! We walked up West 71st Street to Big Nick's where we had some of the best burgers we have ever tasted. I had the yummy Maryland crab cake burger while Clare enjoyed her avocado burger. The only negative we had was the service was very slow to take our order.
After visiting the Julliard School and gift shop, we rode the subway back down to Time Square where we waited in a queue for half an hour to get discounted tickets. After much deliberating (we wanted to see Wicked but they had no discounted tickets), we got tickets to "Memphis", the winner of the 2010 Tony Award for Best Musical. While waiting in the queue, we saw a couple getting wedding photos taken - I couldn't imagine how difficult it must be to do wedding photos in Time Square!
Back at the hotel, we were checked in to our proper room and the manager was very apologetic and gave us 2 free drink vouchers... gee, don't go crazy there! I doubt I will ever recommend this place to anyone as the service is terrible.
Back out to enjoy the New York nightlife, we headed over to the Shubert Theatre to watch "Memphis" - we are so excited to see a broadway show. On our way there, we passed the Naked Cowgirl... "Memphis" was pretty good but we both agreed that we are glad we only paid half price. We will have to look into getting tickets to Wicked tomorrow.
